Euw, the cat, Mary and Callie, the shelties

My blog

  1. Going visiting

    05/10/09 08:32:00 | 0 Comments

Guess I haven't written anything for quite a while! Callie is really becoming part of the family now. She now accepts Euw as part of the "pack"--they touch noses, he can walk under her, past her, lay on the bed with her--and she doesn't even flinch. But, boy, don't let a cat get near the pen--she starts barking up a storm if they wander too near!

I took Callie over to meet the friend who got me hooked on shelties---Callie did well in a strange house--spent a lot...
  2. Hey, we can play!

    04/23/09 07:19:41 | 0 Comments

Mary and Callie have started playing together finally! Mary managed to get it thru to Callie that when she runs away from her, Callie is supposed to run after her. And they even did the "mouth play" the other day! So funny to watch two dogs laying on their bellies, face to face and "dueling" with their mouths!

T and I cracked up at Callie last evening--the girls were in the pen and we were outside just looking for signs of spring. Anyway, I got Callie to run...
  3. Back to the leashes

    04/17/09 14:02:59 | 0 Comments

Oh, those girls! They must have a touch of spring fever. They both decided (at different times, luckily) that they didn't need to listen to me when they were off leash. Cal, of course, scared me the most, but fortunately did go far and let me catch her. Mary is predictable and usually goes to the same places when she gets a wild thought. But doing it at 6:00 a.m. is not the time of day to try my patience! So now they both are on leash just to go to the pen and back into the house. ...
  4. What a good teacher!

    04/14/09 04:12:58 | 0 Comments

I'm working with Callie to teach her a few basic obedience commands. Sometimes it's easy, other times Cal just looks at me with a total "duh" look on her face. Our best "classes" are when I include Mary---Mary does the command quickly and correctly---Cal watches and sees Mary get praise and the next time she, too, is doing it! Maybe not quite as quickly and correctly, but she gets the idea. Right now, we're working on "stay"--it takes Cal a try or...
  5. Callie and Euw

    04/09/09 09:57:45 | 0 Comments

we've just been chilling out around here. Letting Cal relax and get used to our routine and learning what is expected in the way of good behavior.

I was so thrilled this morning, tho. Cal and Mary had been out in the dog pen enjoying the sunshine and cool breezes. I brought them in and Callie sat down right beside Euw, the evil cat, to get her leash taken off! She didn't hesitate, didn't antz, she just sat right down! She was so happy when I praised her, that she danced...
  6. Play time

    04/05/09 05:54:52 | 0 Comments

The time has come for Callie and Mary to decide just who is top dog around here. Mary is becoming a bit more assertive about getting attention when she wants it. The girls are doing some posturing and testing of each other---last evening Callie tried to be "dominate" but Mary was having none of that. A quick snarl and "ugly face" had Cal keeping her distance for a short spell.

And, yet, they are beginning to play with each other---Mary tried to start a game of...
  7. Callie is beginning to relax

    04/01/09 04:53:57 | 0 Comments

She's getting comfortable with not being right beside me all of the time--can settle down and relax even when an evil cat gets between us.

Now that Callie has discovered "carrots" she is almost as carrot crazy as Mary! I gave the girls some carrots this morning and noticed them eyeing each other to see if they might drop a carrot or leave one on the floor that they could snatch!

If the weather clears up and warms up a bit, the girls and I will try our first walk...
  8. Callie discovered carrots!

    03/29/09 06:28:42 | 0 Comments

Yesterday, Mary (aka "Miss Nag") was on my case for attention--and treats. So I pulled out the trusty bag of baby carrots. Mary is a hoot with them--she turns into a large chipmunk and tries to hold as many as possible in her mouth as she goes to her favorite spot to eat them. This time she actually managed to transport 4!

Callie got one and sort of turned up her nose and watched Mary snatch it up. That got Callie curious, so I gave her another one and she finally...
  9. Two weeks

    03/28/09 03:55:23 | 0 Comments

Callie has been with us for 2 weeks now. We're making progress with a lot of things--she accepts the leash, loves attention and is as happy with praise as with a treat.

She still paces when anxious, but I doubt that will ever go away completely. She also paces when she needs to go potty---oppps, I found that out the hard way. But only one accident is worth my learning that pacing is her signal she needs to go out.

She is slowly learning that she can just ignore Euw and...
  10. Callie and the carrots

    03/25/09 14:00:04 | 0 Comments

Callie finally decided today that baby carrots might just be okay. Mary loves them and does her chipmunk imatation by putting 3 in her mouth at once. Callie watched this exhibition of pigginess and then sniffed around the floor, so I gave her a small one to try--she bit into it and walked away. Then she came back and tasted it again. By that time, Mary was done with her's and came to see if there were any more---there went Callie's! I filled up Mary Mouth again and gave Cal another...
